GOZA — In Summary (Review)
A lot of people promote themselves on social media, who doesn’t nowadays? We see everything from construction workers to doctors using social media platforms to market themselves or spread information. It can be hard to stand out, this isn’t some article on social media marketing (don’t worry) I’m just trying to frame what I think sets this next band apart from your standard music group on social media.
No, instead of that standard clip of performing or a picture with their music pasted overtop… Goza goes the extra mile to perform skits that they use their own songs in. It’s a genius idea honestly, they take the role of performer even further in the funny shorts they put out semi-regularly on their social platforms. I tend to catch them on Instagram, but that might just be what I use the most. Anyways, Goza is a rock n’ roll duo from Hawaii that recently started releasing singles on spotify. This married couple combines the power of comedy sketches with awesome rock music while donning thick black lines of paint across their faces.
Their sound has a really nostalgic feel to it, it isn’t some kind of pop rock sort of nonsense that you might hear on the radio. Instead, Goza uses a slightly fuzzy guitar tone and catchy lyrics that just flow so easily. I’m not sure if it was their intention but I definitely get a heavy 70’s rock sound from them and I absolutely love it. The reason I say that is pretty simple. Goza uses a specific rhythm and groove for the most part that has that sultry swaying energy that some of my favorite 70’s bands harnessed so well. It’s a certain flow, smooth and buttery and so easy to listen to.
As far as the drums are concerned you aren’t going to find a super busy sound, but when Rani does get into it in the single “Rock N Roll Soul” she really gets into it. I think that has something to do with that sultry groovy rhythm though. For that kind of sound you really don’t want busy drums filling up the soundscape.
In the lyrics department you get the perfect blend of catchy with some storytelling. You get some raw emotion from Goza’s songs like “Rock N Roll Soul”, “First Ride”, and especially “Can’t Let It Go”. I think “Can’t Let It Go” in particular really highlights the feeling a lot of musicians probably have. It’s rough to start in anything creative, but you just can’t let it go. From the ebb and flow of their signature groove, to the snappy solos and catchy lyrics, Goza has only offered up good content. My only question is, what’s next? Hopefully in the future I can get a little more in depth with a song or an album by this fantastic rock duo from Hawaii.
